The authors construct a \(\text{mod\,}2\) analogue of the Witten genus for \(8k+2\)-dimensional spin manifolds, and modular characteristic numbers for a class of \(\text{spin}^c\) manifolds which they call \(\text{string}^c\) manifolds. If these \(\text{string}^c\) manifolds are spin manifolds one recovers the Witten genus. They conclude by showing these genera vanish on complete intersections in complex projective spaces.
