Let \(G\) be a connected complex reductive group, and let \(H\) be the adjoint stabilizer of a semi-simple element in its Lie algebra \(\mathfrak{g}\). The complementary space to the Lie algebra of \(H\) in \(\mathfrak{g}\) decomposes into a sum of nilpotent Lie subalgebras \(\mathfrak{u}_+\) and \(\mathfrak{u}_{-}\); each exponentiating to Lie subgroups of \(G\) denoted \(U_+\) and \(U_-\). The main theorem of the paper under review is that \(G\times U_-\times U_+\times H\) is a complex quasi-Hamiltonian \(G\times H\)-space, with \(G\times H\)-action given by \[ (g,h)\cdot (a,u,v,b)=(hag^{-1},huh^{-1},hvh^{-1},hbh^{-1}) \] and moment mapping given by \(\mu(a,u,v,b)=(a^{-1}(u^{-1}bv)a,b^{-1})\). The holomorphic 2-form is also explicitly given. The proof of this theorem is given in an appendix. Let \(I\) be some indexing set and let \((\Sigma_i,G_i)\), for \(i\in I\), be a collection of pairs where each \(\Sigma_i\) is a compact surface with boundary, and each \(G_i\) is complex reductive Lie group. The author describes a procedure to use the above theorem to glue together (given some specified data) the corresponding collection of Betti moduli spaces \(\{\mathrm{Hom}(\pi_1(\Sigma_i),G_i)/G_i\;|\;i\in I\}\) to obtain a symplectic space. Note that each Betti moduli space parametrizes flat principal \(G_i\)-bundles over the surface \(\Sigma_i\). In 1984, \textit{W. M. Goldman} initiated the study of the symplectic geometry of such Betti moduli spaces in [Adv. Math. 54, 200--225 (1984; Zbl 0574.32032)]. The paper under review can be thought of as an extension of latter work to, in the words of the author, ``moduli spaces of connections on bundles on Riemann surfaces, where the structure group of the bundle may vary''.
