This paper deals with characterizations of rectangular totally positive and strictly totally positive matrices by minors, by their full rank factorization and by their thin \(QR\) factorization. These are extensions of the results presented by \textit{M. Gasca} and \textit{J. M. Pena} [SIAM J. Matrix Anal. Appl. 4, 1132--1140 (1993; Zbl 0788.65052)] using the thin \(QR\) factorization instead of the \(QR\) factorization.
