Various generalizations of \textit{W.\,A.\thinspace Kirk}'s fixed point result [Am.\ Math.\ Mon.\ 72, 1004--1006 (1965; Zbl 0141.32402)] are being reviewed. Among these, we mention (i) the common fixed points of continuous semigroups of nonexpansive mappings and (ii) the relation between the fixed point property and the normal structure on Banach spaces associated to locally compact groups.
