The paper deals with the derivation of hierarchical a posteriori error estimates for a vertex-centered finite volume method applied to linear second order elliptic partial differential equations. The reliability and efficiency of the hierarchical estimators is assessed, and a saturation-type property related to the finite volume approximation is discussed. Finally a numerical example illustrates the good behavior of the proposed method.
