The authors present a meshless technique for the numerical solution of certain elliptic boundary value problems. The approximate solution is expressed as a linear combination of fundamental solutions of the governing equation of the problem under consideration. Singularities are avoided by placing the sources on a fictitious surface exterior to the problem geometry, known as the pseudo-boundary. The authors study the case in which the number of sources exceeds the number of boundary (collocation) points. For choosing a unique approximate solution, they either minimize the functional of the variational formulation corresponding to the boundary value problem or minimize the norm of the vector of coefficients used to express the linear combination of sources. A numerical algorithm for the Dirichlet problem for Laplace's equation in the disk is described. Numerical experiments for a variety of geometries in two and three dimensions are presented.
