The electromagnetic model under study is presented by finding \(u\in H^1_0(\Omega)\) that satisfies the variational formulation: \((\epsilon^{-1}\nabla u, \nabla v)_{L^2(\Omega)}-\omega^2(\mu u,v)_{L^2(\Omega)} =-(f,v)_{L^2(\Omega)}\), for all \(v\in H^1_0(\Omega)\), where the domain \(\Omega\) is an open bounded subset of \(\mathbb R^d\) \((d=2,3)\) split into two parts \(\Omega_1\) and \(\Omega_2\) such that \(\bar\Omega=\bar\Omega_1\cup\bar\Omega_2\) and \(\Omega_1\cap\Omega_2=\emptyset\), \(\epsilon\) denotes the electric permittivity which is strictly positive in \(\Omega_1\) and strictly negative in \(\Omega_2\), and it satisfies \(\epsilon,\epsilon^{-1}\in L^\infty(\Omega)\), \(\mu\) denotes the magnetic permeability such that \(\mu,\mu^{-1}\in L^\infty(\Omega)\), \(\omega\) represents the frequency, and \(f\) is anedholm well-posed framework if \(\sup\{ {\int_{\Omega_2}\epsilon^{-2}|\nabla(\mathcal{R}(v|_\Sigma))|^2/ \int_{\Omega_1}\epsilon^{-2}|v|^2}: \;v\in H^1_{0,\Gamma_1}(\Omega_1), \;v\not=0\}<1\), where \(\mathcal R\) is a continuous and linear operator from \(H^{1/2}_{0,0}(\Sigma)=\{v|_\Sigma:\;v\in H^1_{0,\Gamma_1}(\Omega_1)\}\) into \( H^1_{0,\Gamma_2}(\Omega_2)\). A finite element \(H^1\)-error estimate is stated for a discrete variational formulation of the continuous problem under study.
