The Schmitt-Vogel lemma provides a criterion for generating the radical of a polynomial ideal up to radical. In the paper under review the author proves a result, based on combinatorial considerations, which generalizes the Schmitt-Vogel lemma for the class of monomial ideals. This result can be used for computing the arithmetical rank of some monomial ideals.
