The aim of this paper is to present a new approach to the subnormal completion problem for 2-variable weighted shifts. First of all, the authors use tools and techniques from the theory of truncated moment problems to build a general strategy to solve such completion problems. In particular, they show that, if all quadratic moments are known, the natural necessary conditions for the existence of a subnormal completion are also sufficient. An interesting result related to this type of investigations is that the algebraic variety of the associated truncated moment problem is precisely the support of the Berger measure of the subnormal completion.
