Given a holomorphic self-map \(\phi\) of the unit ball \(B_n\) in \(\mathbb C^n\), the composition operator \(C_\phi\), defined by \(C_\phi f=f\circ\phi\), certainly preserves the space of all holomorphic functions on \(B_n\). However, when \(n>1\), unlike the one-variable situation, it is well known that \(C_\phi\) does not preserve standard subspaces such as the Hardy spaces, the Bergman spaces, etc. The main purpose of the paper under review is to obtain a characterization of compact operators \(C_\phi\) on BMOA(\(B_n\)). Here, BMOA(\(B_n\)) denotes the space of those holomorphic functions on \(B_n\) that are Poisson-Szegő integrals of BMO functions on the unit sphere, where BMO is defined by the standard nonisotropic balls. In the one-variable case, several criteria for compact composition operators on BMOA(\(B_1\)) are known. One of them, due to due to \textit{P.\,S.\thinspace Bourdon, J.\,A.\thinspace Cima} and \textit{A.\,L.\thinspace Matheson} [Trans.\ Am.\ Math.\ Soc.\ 351, No.\,6, 2183--2196 (1999; Zbl 0920.47029)], is given by means of certain uniform vanishing Carleson type condition involving the inducing function \(\phi\) and \(f\) in the unit ball of BMOA(\(B_1\)). That criterion is generalized to higher-dimensional balls in this paper. The authors also provide characterizations for boundedness and compactness of \(C_\phi\) on BMOA(\(B_n\)) by means of pullback measures.
