Let \(A\) be a unital simple \(C^*\)-algebra with a unique normalized trace \(\tau\). The authors introduce the fundamental group \(F(A)\) of \(A\) as the set of all numbers \(\tau\otimes \text{Tr}(p)\) for some projection \(p \in M_n(A)\) such that \(pM_n(A)p\) is isomorphic to \(A\). The authors study basic properties of the fundamental groups of unital simple \(C^*\)-algebras and compute \(F(A)\) of several nuclear or non-nuclear \(C^*\)-algebras. The essential tools are \(K\)-theoretical obstruction and Picard groups of \(C^*\)-algebras, see \textit{K.\,Kodaka} [J.~Lond.\ Math.\ Soc., II.\ Ser.\ 56, No.\,1, 179--188 (1997; Zbl 0892.46067)].
