The authors study the weight function of a random linear code over a finite field. It is not difficult to calculate the first moment of this function, but already the second moment requires some nontrivial calculations. Here a general approach for calculating higher moments is presented, and the case of the third moment is considered in detail. Moments of random coset codes are also discussed.
