Let \(X, Y\) be spaces (in practice finite polyhedra), and \[ \{X,Y\}= \varinjlim_k [\Sigma^k\; X, \Sigma^k\; Y], \] then \(\{X,X\}= \text{End}(X)\) is a ring and Aut\((X)\)= all invertible elements of End\((X),\) is a group. The main issue of the present paper is to reprove known results about the algebraic structure of End\((X)\) as well as that of Aut\((X)\) by using new methods or to use these methods to display algebraic properties which appear in the present paper for the first time. In a final section some known properties of these algebraic objects are listed without proof. Here are some examples: {\parindent5,5mm \begin{itemize}\item[1)] \(\Aut(X)\) for a finite complex is finitely presented. \item[2)] For a finite polyhedron \(X\) the following properties are equivalent: {\parindent11mm \begin{itemize}\item[a)] All Betti numbers of \(X\) are less than or equal to 1. \item[b)] \(\Aut(X)\) is finite. \item[c)] All commutators \([x,y]=xy-yx \in \text{End}(X)\) are torsion elements. \item[d)] if some power \(x^n, \;x \in \text{End}(X)\) is a torsion element, then \(x\) is a torsion element. \end{itemize}} \item[3)] If some Betti numbers of \(X\) are bigger than 1, then \(\Aut(X)\) is not solvable. \item[4)] Every quasi-invertible ideal of End\((X)\) is finite and nilpotent. \end{itemize}} While 1)--3) are not new, 4) is an example of a new result. Some results about \(p\)-localizations \(X_{(p)}\) and \(p\)-completions \(\hat X_p\) of a space \(X\) are presented.
