This note provides a brief look at the classical convergence theory for multigrid methods developed in the late 1970s and 1980s. The theory is presented from a strictly algebraic point of view and focuses on the V-cycle. The analytical properties are boiled down to a basic property and elucidate how it is related to several assumptions commonly made in multigrid theory.
