    Let \(A\) be a set together with a multiplication \(*: A\times A\to A\) and a map \(\alpha : A\to A \) such that the condition \[ \alpha (x) * (y*z)= (x * y) *\alpha (z) \] is satisfied for all \(x,\) \(y,\) \(z\in A\). Then \((A, *, \alpha)\) is called a hom-associative structure. If \((A,*, \alpha)\) is a hom-associative structure, then \(A\) is called a twist if there is an associative multiplication \(. : A\times A\to A\) such that \(x*y=\alpha (x. y),\) for any \(x,y\in A\). If \((A,*)\) is a set \(A\) with a binary operation \(*: A\times A\to A\) such that there exist \(a,b\in A\) such that \(a\neq b\) and \(x*a=x*b,\) \(a*x=b*x\) for any \(x\in A\) then \(A\) is called strongly degenerate. The authors prove that if \((A, *, \alpha)\) is a hom-associative structure with \(\alpha \) surjective, then either \(A\) is a twist or \(A\) is strongly degenerate. They also prove that if \((A, *, \alpha)\) is a hom-associative structure such that \(A\) is not strongly degenerate and \(\alpha \) is surjective then \(\alpha \) is bijective. In another section of the article consequences for the deformation theory of hom-algebras with surjective twisting map are discussed.
