From the authors' abstract: ``The study of maximal-primary irreducible ideals in a commutative graded connected Noetherian algebra over a field is in principle equivalent to the study of the corresponding quotient algebras. Such algebras are Poincaré duality algebras. A prototype for such an algebra is the cohomology with field coefficients of a closed oriented manifold. Topological constructions on closed manifolds often lead to algebraic constructions on Poincaré duality algebras and therefore also on maximal-primary irreducible ideals. It is the purpose of this note to examine several of these and develop some of their basic properties.'' Here the author considers an algebra \(A\) to be commutative graded, whenever \(a\cdot b = (-1)^{d\cdot e} b \cdot a,\) where \(d = \deg a\) and \(e = \deg b,\) for all \(a, b \in A\). Examples of these constructions are -- among others -- the projective space bundle associated to a vector bundle over a manifold (the Projective Bundle Theorem), the submanifold dual to a line bundle, and the connected sum of two manifolds. The techniques the authors' use are related to those of classical commutative algebra and zero-dimensional Gorenstein rings that are quotients of polynomial rings. In particular, the perfect pairing \(R_{s-i} \times R_i \to R_s =k,\) where \(R = \bigoplus_{i=0}^s R_i\) is a graded zero-dimensional Gorenstein \(k\)-algebra and \(s\) its socle degree. Another feature is Macaulay's inverse system in order to construct irreducible maximal-primary ideals with socle generator of degree \(s\) as the (differential) annihilator of a homogeneous polynomial in degree \(s\).
