For any symmetric space \(X=G/K\) of non-compact type and of arbitrary real rank, the authors prove that the local zeta function \(\zeta(s;x,b)\) can be analytically continued to an entire function on \(\mathbb{C}\) if \(x\) is not the origin \(\overline{1}\) of the symmetric space \(X\). Further, under an assumption on \(X,\) they prove that \(\zeta(s;\overline{1},b)\) extends meromorphically to \(\mathbb{C},\) its poles are simple and located possibly at \(s=\frac{d}{2}-r\), \(r\in \mathbb{N}_0\), and show how the residues can be computed using the mentioned assumption. Further, the authors mention that any symmetric space \(G/K\) of non-compact type for \(G\) a classical group satisfies the assumption. Moreover they prove that any non-compact symmetric space \(G/K\) satisfies the assumption if \(G\) is one of the groups \(SU(p,l+1-p)\) \((2\leq p \leq \frac{l}{2})\), \(Sl(l+1,\mathbb{H})\), \(SO^*(4p)\), \(SO(4p+2)\) or any group of split \(\mathbb{R}\)-rank \(1\). At the end of the paper, the residues of \(\zeta(s;\overline{1},b)\) and the values of \(\zeta(s;\overline{1},b)\) at \(s=0\) and \(s=-\frac{1}{2}\) are computed, e.g., in the case where \(G\) is a complex semisimple Lie group quiet explicitly. The authors use a definition of the local zeta function based on the Laplace-Mellin transform of the solution of the heat equation on \(X\) and appropriate asymptotics techniques. The assumption on \(X\) is expressed by supposing that the \(\theta\)-function \(\theta_X(t)\) attached to \(X\) satisfies certain asymptotic behavior for short times. The authors extend a known result for rank one non-compact symmetric spaces. The value as well as the value of the derivative of \(\zeta(s,\overline{1},b)\) at \(s=0\) are important in the computation of the so called one-loop effective potential of a scalar field on \(X.\) Such correction type computations were previously done by \textit{R. Camporesi} [Phys. Rev. D 43, No.~12, 3958--3965 (1991), \url{doi:10.1103/PhysRevD.43.3958}] in the case of the anti de Sitter space \(SO_1(4,1)/SO(4),\) i.e., in a rank one case.
