    \(\mathcal{P}_n\) (respectively, \(\mathcal{P}_{fin}\)) denotes the class of (Tychonoff) spaces that can be expressed as the union of at most \(n\) (respectively, finitely many) locally compact subspaces. \(R(X) = R^1(X)\) denotes the set of points at which a space \(X\) is not locally compact and, for \(n\geq 1\), \(R^{n+1}(X) = R(R^n(X))\). \(\mathcal{P}_{\frac{1}{2}}\) denotes the class of compact spaces and, for \(n\geq 1\), \(\mathcal{P}_{n+\frac{1}{2}}\) the class of spaces \(X\) with \(R^n(X)\) compact. Results include the following generalizations of classical results for locally compact spaces: (1) \(X \in \mathcal{P}_{fin}\) iff \(cX \setminus X \in \mathcal{P}_{fin}\) for some (equivalently, each) compactification \(cX\) of \(X\). (2) \(X \in \mathcal{P}_n\) iff \(R^n(X) =\emptyset\). (3) \(X \in \mathcal{P}_n\) iff \(cX \setminus X \in \mathcal{P}_{n - \frac{1}{2}}\) for some (equivalently, each) compactification \(cX\) of \(X\). (4) \(X \in \mathcal{P}_{n+ \frac{1}{2}}\) iff \(cX \setminus X \in \mathcal{P}_{n }\) for some (equivalently, each) compactification \(cX\) of \(X\).
