Let \(X\) and \(Y\) be real or complex Banach spaces, \({\mathcal A}\) and \(\Pi_{q,p}\) denote the operator ideals of approximable and \((q,p)\)-absolutely summing operators, respectively, and cot\(X\) denote the cotype of \(X\). The first theorem in the paper under review is the following one. Theorem 2.1. Let \(X\) and \(Y\) be infinite-dimensional Banach spaces, \(2 \leq p < \infty\) and \(q,r >0\) such that cot\(Y \geq p > q \geq r\). If \({\mathcal A}(X,Y) \subseteq \Pi_{q,p}(X,Y)\), then id\(_X\) is \((\frac{pq}{p-q})\)-summing. This result is an improvement of the linear case of some results of the second author in [Stud. Math. 157, No.~2, 121--131 (2003; Zbl 1031.46052)]. The main result of this paper is Theorem 2.5. Let \(X\) and \(Y\) be infinite-dimensional Banach spaces. If cot\(Y \geq p > q \geq r > \frac{2pq}{pq+2p-2q}\), then there exists an approximable non-\((q,r)\)-summing linear operator from \(X\) to \(Y\). In this way, the authors are able to improve a classical result due to \textit{W. Davis} and \textit{W. B. Johnson} [Stud. Math. 51, 81--85 (1974; Zbl 0286.47015)], a classical theorem (Proposition 8.1(2)) due to \textit{J. Lindenstrauss} and \textit{A. Pełczyński} [Stud. Math. 29, 275--326 (1968; Zbl 0183.40501)], and some results (Proposition 5.2(i)) due to \textit{G. Bennett} [Duke Math. J. 44, 603--639 (1977; Zbl 0389.47015)]. The authors point out that some of their results are sharp and that the results of this paper can be adapted to absolutely summing polynomials and multilinear mappings.
