The paper under review investigates the structure of linearly joined ideals and the properties of the linearly joined varieties. The author extends the characterization of scrollers given in \textit{M. Barile} and \textit{M. Morales} [Rend. Semin. Mat. Univ. Padova 111, 161--178 (2004; Zbl 1167.14317)] to the case of linearly joined varieties. As a consequence he computes some invariants of linearly joined varieties, such as depth, connectedness dimension, cohomological dimension and the arithmetical rank. He also gives an algorithm to describe equations of linearly joined varieties. Given a polynomial ring \(S\) and the defining ideal \(I\subset S\) of a \(2\)-regular algebraic set which is a union of linear spaces, he proves that the arithmetical rank of \(I\) is equal to the projective dimension of \(S/I\). In particular, this is true for squarefree monomial ideals having a \(2\)-linear resolution.
