    Let \((X,d)\) be a metric space, \(T\) a self-mapping of \(X\). We shall call \(T\) a generalized weakly contractive mapping if for all \(x,y\in X\), \[ \Psi(d(Tx,Ty))\leq\Psi(m(x, y))-\Phi(\max\{d(x, y), d(y,Ty)\}), \] where \(m(x,y)= \max\{d(x, y), d(x,Tx)\}\), \(d(y,Ty)\), \({1\over 2}[d(x, Ty)+ d(y, Tx)]\), \(\Psi:[0,\infty)\to [0,\infty)\) is monotone increasing, continuous and \(\Psi(t)= 0\) if and only if \(t= 0\), and \(\Phi:[0,\infty)\to [0,\infty)\) is continuous with \(\Phi(t)= 0\) if and only if \(t= 0\). In the present paper the authors prove the following theorems: Theorem. Let \((x,d)\) be a complete metric space, \(T\) a generalized weakly contractive self-mapping of \(X\). Then \(T\) has a unique fixed point and every periodic point of \(T\) is a fixed point of \(T\). Theorem. Let \((X,d)\) be a complete metric space. Let \(S,T: X\to X\) be self-mappings such that for all \(x,y\in X\), \[ \begin{multlined} \Psi(d(Sx, Ty))\leq\Psi(\max\{d(x, y), d(x, Sx), d(y,Ty),\\ \tfrac12[d(x,Ty)+d(y, Sx)]\})-(\max\{d(x, y), d(x, Sx), d(y,Ty)\}).\end{multlined} \] Then \(S\) and \(T\) have a unique common fixed point. Moreover, any fixed point of \(S\) is a fixed point of \(T\) and conversely, and \(\text{Fix}(S^n)\cap\text{Fix}(T^n)= \text{Fix}(S)\cap\text{Fix}(T)\), for each \(n\in\mathbb{N}\).
