Let \(S,T\) be maximal monotone operators defined on a reflexive Banach space \(X\) and \(p\in X\). By using representative functions, the authors provide conditions characterizing the fact that the monotone operator \(S(\cdot+p)+T(\cdot)\) is surjective. Sufficient conditions for the surjectivity of \(S+T\) are deduced, as well as for the nonemptiness of the solutions of the inclusion \(0\in R(S+T)\). Some special cases are discussed, rediscovering results from the literature.
