Considered are IBV problems in 2D bounded domains for a special semilinear wave equation with an exponential type nonlinearity. In case of a homogeneous Dirichlet boundary condion, a Strichartz type estimate for solutions is proved. The estimation should hold for Neumann boundary conditions as well. Combining this estimate with an energy identity and a sharp logarithmic inequality, the existence of local in time solutions is proved. In case \(E(u, t=0) <1\), unique global existence of a solution is obtained. The same result holds for \(E(u, t=0)=1\). For the case \(E(u,t=0)>1\), an instability result is shown.
