A comparison technique is proposed by constructing functions which satisfies upper and lower differential inequalities. Exact non-exponential rates are determined for the growth and decay of solutions of linear functional differential equations with unbounded delay. This can be applied to rule out exponential asymptotic stability. Examples are also included to illustrate how the rate of the growth or decay of solutions depends on the growth of the unbounded delay.
