For a Finsler metric \(F\), the author introduces two new non-Riemannian quantities, by taking the vertical and, respectively, the horizontal covariant derivative of the \(S\)-curvature of \(F\), with respect to the Chern connection of \(F\). The second one is denoted by \(H\). He investigates three classes of Finsler metrics with special non-Riemannian curvature properties. The main results are the following ones. A Randers metric has almost isotropic \(S\)-curvature if and only if the non-Riemannian quantity \(H\) almost vanishes. A Randers metric has zero \(S\)-curvature if and only if it has vanishing \(H\)-curvature.
