The authors prove that the relative commutator with respect to a subvariety of a variety of omega-groups can be described in terms of Galois theory. The authors also study the reflection of the category of loops to the category of loops to the category of groups. The main sections deal with the relative commutator; double central extensions; the commutator in terms of categorical Galois theory; and the example of the associator of loops.
