The zero solution \(x(t)\equiv 0\) of (1), (2) is finite-time stable if there exist an open neighbourhood \(N\subseteq D\) of the origin and a function \(T: N\setminus\{0\}\to (0,\infty)\), called the setting-time function, such that hold: {\parindent7mm \begin{itemize}\item[(i)] finite-time convergence: For \(x\in N\setminus\{0\}\), \(s^x(t)\) is defined on \([0, T(x))\), \(s^x(t)\in N\setminus\{0\}\) for all \(t\in [0,T(x))\) and \(\lim_{t\to T(x)} s(x,t)= 0\); \item[(ii)] Lyapunov stability: For every \(\varepsilon> 0\) there exists \(\delta> 0\) such that \({\mathcal L}(0)\subset N\) and for every \(x\in{\mathcal L}(0)\setminus\{0\}\), \(s(t,x)\in{\mathcal L}_\varepsilon(0)\) for all \(t\in [0,T(x))\). \end{itemize}} Sufficient conditions for the finite-time stability of \(x= 0\) are derived.
