Any epimorphism of rings \(\Lambda\to R\) determines a right exact reflector \(L:=R\otimes_\Lambda-\) on the category \(\Lambda\)-Mod of unital left modules over \(\Lambda\). Its left derived functors \(L_i=\text{Tor}_i^\Lambda(R,-)\) determine a family of full subcategories \(\cdots\subseteq\mathcal T_{n+1}\subseteq\mathcal T_n\subseteq\cdots\subseteq\mathcal T_0\) of \(\Lambda\)-Mod. The objects of \(\mathcal T_n\) are the modules \(X\) with \(L_iX=0\) for every \(i\leq n\). Theorem 2.2 states that there is a natural isomorphism \(\Hom_\Lambda(L_nM,-)_{|\mathcal R}\cong\text{Ext}^n_\Lambda(M,-)_{|\mathcal R}\) for every \(M\in\mathcal T_{n-1}\), where \(\mathcal R\) is the full subcategory of \(\Lambda\)-Mod whose objects are those modules \(X\) with \(LX\cong X\). Now we follow the summary of the paper: ``Combined with recent work of \textit{D. Rodelo} and \textit{T. Van der Linden} [Higher central extensions and cohomology. Pré-Publ. DMUC 11-03 (2011)], this establishes the existence of universal central extensions of groups and Lie algebras. Interpreted in the homotopy category of topological spaces, it provides a new perspective on existing results about Quillen's plus construction and its effect on homotopy groups.'' | |||
