In this paper, the author describes a part of the residual spectrum of split connected classical groups \(G_n = \text{Sp}_{2n}, \text{SO}_{2n+1}, \text{SO}_{2n}\) over a number field using two approaches: Langlands' theory of Eisenstein series and Arthur's description coming from the trace formula. The considered part of the residual spectrum is supported in the maximal parabolic subgroup with the Levi factor isomorphic to \(\text{GL}_n\). In Section 1 of the paper, the author applies the Langlands approach. The decomposition of the considered part of the residual spectrum is given in terms of the poles of the symmetric and exterior square \(L\)-functions. This is a consequence of Shahidi's work on the normalization of intertwining operators, and the analytic properties of the relative rank one Eisenstein series. In Section 2, the author reviews Arthur's conjectural description of the discrete spectrum for \(G_n(\mathbb{A})\) given in terms of parameters and twisted endoscopy. In Section 3, the author compares Arthur's conjectural description with the results from Section 1 obtained using the approach of Langlands. Assuming Arthur's description, he gives a more precise decomposition of the considered part of the residual spectrum and proves that the symmetric and exterior square \(L\)-functions are holomorphic inside the critical strip \(0 < \text{Re}(s) < 1\). | |||
