Let \(\sigma\) be a one-to-one mapping of \({\mathbb N}\) into itself, such that \(\sigma^p(n)\neq n\) for all \(p, n \in {\mathbb N}\), where \(\sigma^p(n)\) denotes the \(p\)th iterate of \(\sigma\) at \(n\). A continuous linear functional \(\varphi\) on \( \ell_\infty\) is called a \(\sigma\)-mean if (i) \(\varphi(x)\geq 0\) for all \(x=(x_n)\in \ell_\infty\) with \(x_n \geq 0\) \((n\in {\mathbb N})\); (ii) \(\varphi((1,1,1,\ldots))=1\); (iii) \(\varphi(x)=\varphi((x_{\sigma(n)}))\) for all \(x\in \ell_\infty\). Let \(V_\sigma\) be the set of bounded sequences all of whose \(\sigma\)-means are equal. It is known that \(V_\sigma\), endowed with the norm \(\| \cdot\|_{\ell_\infty}\), is a non-separable closed subspace of \(\ell_\infty\). An infinite matrix \(A=(a_{nk})\) is \(\sigma\)-conservative if \(Ax\in V_\sigma\) for every sequence \(x\in c\), the space of all convergent sequences. In the paper under review, the Hausdorff measure for noncompactness is used for obtaining a sufficient condition for a \(\sigma\)-conservative matrix to define a compact operator. Some identities and estimates for the Hausdorff measure of noncompactness are established for certain matrix operators on \(V_\sigma\) and then some conditions for compactness of such operators are deduced.
