Let \(P\) and \(Q\) be two idempotents in an associate complex algebra satisfying \((PQ)^m = (QP)^m\) and \((PQ)^{m-1} \neq (QP)^{m-1}\) for some \(m\geq 2\). The main result of the paper is the classification of all finite algebras, generated by \(P\) and \(Q\). The authors prove, that up to algebra isomorphism, there are exactly 8 types of such algebras. Moreover, they give en explicit formula for the group inverse of every element of such an algebra with a nondegenerate leading term. This is a generalization of the results by \textit{X. Liu, L. Wu} and \textit{Y. Yu} [Linear Multilinear Algebra 59, No. 1--3, 101--115 (2011; Zbl 1220.15008)]. Several additional topics are discussed, including the case of idempotents in Banach algebras.
