The author studies the following abstract linear dissipative integro-differential equation with infinite memory: \[ u''(t) + A u(t) - \int_0^{\infty} g(s) B u(t-s)ds =0,\quad t>0, \] together with the initial conditions: \[ u(-t) = u_0(t),\quad t \in [0,\,\infty),\quad u'(0)=u_1. \] Here, \(A\) and \(B\) are some self-adjoint linear positive definite operators, \(g\) is a given dissipative function, \(u_0\) is the given history of \(u_1\) is the initial data. This equation ca be used in viscolasticity as a model for a generalized Kirchhoff viscoelastic beam with memory. The author considers this problem in an abstract Hilbert space setting, studying the stability of the solutions. It is shown that stability holds for a large class of kernels \(g\), and an estimate on the decay rate of the solution in function of \(g\) is provided. The paper ends with some applications of the theoretical results, namely for the wave equation, a Petrovsky type system, an elasticity model, infinite memory and internal damping and a model for finite memory.
