The authors generalize results obtained by other authors. In particular, they construct a certain symmetric quasi anti-bidiagonal matrix with given eigenvalues and show that this problem is equivalent to the inverse eigenvalue problem for a certain symmetric tridiagonal matrix with the same given eigenvalues. They show how these two matrices are related and give conditions for the existence and uniqueness of the latter matrix. Finally, they give necessary and sufficient conditions for the former matrix to be nonnegative.
