The paper deals with the spectral properties of random block operators which are involved in the modelling of mesoscopic disordered systems. First, the basic properties of block operators are presented, and then, the special case of operators with constant diagonal is considered. The ergodic properties of random block operators are examined and studied, and it is shown that the density of states exists for suitable ergodic random block operators and that it is bounded. The paper concludes with Lifshits tails for random block operators.
