The authors establish a critical local well-posedness theory for the energy critical defocusing nonlinear Schrödinger equation (NLS) \(i \partial_t u+\Delta u=|u|^4u\) on the three-dimensional torus \(\mathbb{T}^3\). This is the first critical well-posedness result in the case of a NLS on a compact manifold. As a natural consequence of the local theory, global well-posedness for the NLS is true for small \(H^s(\mathbb{T}^3)\) data. As is standard, these results hold equally well for the focusing problem \(i \partial_t u+\Delta u=-|u|^4u\). For the proof, the authors derive a refined trilinear Strichartz estimate for solutions to the Schrödinger equation and use a suitable modification of critical function space theory.
