The authors consider the time-dependent motion of compressible viscoelastic fluids of the Oldroyd model in \({\mathbb R}^{N} (N \geq 2)\) under the assumption that the initial density is bounded away from zero. The authors have two main objectives. Firstly, they would like to establish the well-posedness of the system in the largest possible functional framework, that is, critical spaces (which are very close to the functional space of weak solutions in the case of two dimensions). Secondly, the authors explicitly explore the smoothing effect and damping effect of the linearized hyperbolic-parabolic system with convective terms, which play an important role in the proof of global existence for small data. Here they need to use some intrinsic properties of viscoelastic fluids and have to consider the complicated coupling effect between the velocity, the density and the deformation tensor.
