The author discusses the orbital stability of the solitary travelling wave solutions of the generalized Boussinesq equation, i.e., the system of equations \[ V_t-U_x=0,\;U_t+p(V)_x=-\kappa V_{xxx} \] with \(p'<0\), and the generalized Korteweg-de Vries equation \[ V_t+p(V)_x=-\kappa V_{xxx}, \] under assumption that \(p''>0\). Results of two types are obtained. (i) If there are no assumptions on \(p'''\), then the stability is proven for small amplitude solitary waves. (ii) If, in addition, it is assumed that \(p'''\leq 0\), then the stability takes place for any solitary waves. Also, stability of small amplitude solitary waves is established for a generalization of the Boussinesq equation with variable \(\kappa\) (the Euler-Korteweg equation). The method is based on checking the convexity of the so-called moment of instability, see [\textit{M. Grillakis, J. Satah} and \textit{W. Strauss}, J. Funct. Anal. 74, 160--197 (1987; Zbl 0656.35122)].
