The covering dimension \(d(X, \mathcal F)\) of a space \(X\) by a normal base \(\mathcal F\) was introduced in the book by \textit{S. D. Iliadis} [Universal spaces and mappings. Noth-Holland Mathematics Studies 198. Amsterdam: Elsevier (2005; Zbl 1072.54001)]. In the realm of completely regular spaces the authors prove different basic theorems for the dimension function such as a subset theorem, finiteness and countability theorems, a product theorem etc. They also observe that for any normal base \(\mathcal F\) of a non-compact (resp. compact) space \(X\) we have \(d(X, \mathcal F) = \dim \omega(X, \mathcal F)\), where \(\omega(X, \mathcal F)\) is the corresponding Wallman compactification of \(X\) (resp. \(d(X, \mathcal F) = \dim X\)). Furthermore, they note that any relative dimension \(d(X, Y)\) [see \textit{A. Ch. Chigogidze}, in: General topology, Function spaces and dimension, Work collect., Moskva 1985, 67--117 (1985; Zbl 0625.54040)], where \(X \subset Y\) (resp. any uniform dimension \(\mu\)-\(\dim X\) [see \textit{M. G. Charalambous}, J. Lond. Math. Soc., II. Ser. 11, 137--143 (1975; Zbl 0306.54048)]), where \(X\) is a uniform space \((X, \mu)\)), can be realized as the covering dimension \(d(X, \mathcal F)\) of the space \(X\) by some normal base \(\mathcal F\).
