Let \(X\) be a Banach space and \({\mathcal B}(X)\) denote the set of all bounded subsets of \(X\). We say that a map \(\beta:{\mathcal B}(X)\to [0,\infty)\) is a homogeneous measure of noncompactness on \(X\) if for all \(S,T\in{\mathcal B}(X)\): (1) \(\beta(S)= 0\) iff \(\overline S\) is compact, (2) \(\beta(S)\leq\beta(T)\) for all \(S\subset T\), (3) \(\beta(S\cup\{x\})= \beta(S)\) for all \(x\in X\), (4) \(\beta(\overline S)=\beta(S)\); (5) \(\beta(\text{conv}(S))= \beta(S)\), (6) \(\beta(S+ Y)\leq\beta(S)+\beta(T)\), (7) \(\beta(\lambda S)=|\lambda|\beta(S)\) for all scalars \(\lambda\). Two homogeneous measures of noncompactness \(\beta\) and \(\gamma\) on an infinite-dimensional Banach space \(X\) are called equivalent if there exist constants \(b,c> 0\) such that \(b\beta(S)\leq\gamma(S)\leq c\beta(S)\) for all \(S\in{\mathcal B}(X)\). If such constants do not exist, the measures of noncompactness are ``inequivalent''. In the present paper, the authors prove that, in some infinite-dimensional Banach spaces \(X\), there exist inequivalent measures of noncompactness; for example, if \(X\) is a Hilbert space, or if \(X= L^P(\Omega,\Sigma,\mu)\), where \(1\leq p\leq\infty\), or if \(X= C(K)\) (the Banach space of continuous maps \(f: K\to\mathbb{R}\) with the sup-norm), where \(K\) is a compact Hausdorff space with infinitely many points, or if \(X= W^{m,p}(\Omega)\) is the Sobolev space, where \(\Omega\subset\mathbb{R}^n\) is an open nonempty subset.
