Let \(R\) be a commutative ring and suppose \(\mathcal{T}\) is a \(R\)-linear triangulated category. Given a multiplicatively closed subset \(S\) of \(R\), form the localized ring \(R[S^{-1}]\). The authors of this paper construct a category \(\mathcal{T}[S^{-1}]\) with the same objects as \(\mathcal{T}\) and with morphisms \(\mathcal{T}[S^{-1}](A, B) := \mathcal{T}(A, B) \otimes_R R[S^{-1}]\) for all objects \(A\) and \(B\). The authors prove that \(\mathcal{T}[S^{-1}]\) is triangulated. The usual embedding of \(R\) into \(R[S^{-1}]\) induces a map from \(\mathcal{T}\) to \(\mathcal{T}[S^{-1}]\), and there is a long exact sequence that relates \(\mathcal{T}(A, B)\) to \(\mathcal{T}[S^{-1}](A, B)\). The authors consider the aforementioned construction when \(R = \mathbb{Z}\) and \(\mathcal{T} = \mathcal{KK}^G\) for some locally compact group \(G\). If \(S = \mathbb{Z}\backslash{0}\), they obtain an alternate definition of \(KK^G\)-theory with coefficients in \(\mathbb{Q}\). The authors note that their definition differs from the standard definition, but point out that their definition has some advantages over the standard one; in particular, the category formed by the authors' groups is triangulated, which may not be true for the standard definition. The authors apply their results in several directions. First, they show that \(q\cdot KK^G_*(A, B; \mathbb{Z}_q) = 0\) for all primes \(q\) and all \(G-C^*\)-algebras; they also consider analogous questions for real \(KK^G\)-theory. Second, they formulate two conjectures that are equivalent to the Baum-Connes conjecture with coefficients. Third, the authors reformulate some known results that relate real and complex Kasparov theory and \(K\)-theory.
