This paper studies the global and the infinitesimal versions of representations up to homotopy. Let us recall that Crainic and Moerdijk stated a rigidity conjecture which gives the conditions under which the deformation cohomology for their deformation complex for Lie algebroids should vanish. In this work, the authors show how representations up to homotopy can be used to prove this conjecture. After some recalls about representations up to homotopy, the authors construct the relevant differential functor. Then they prove a van Est type isomorphism theorem. They show that by differentiating the adjoint representation of a Lie groupoid, one gets the adjoint representation of the corresponding Lie algebroid. Finally, they prove the rigidity conjecture of Crainic and Moerdijk.
