A Danielewski hypersurface \(X_{Q,n}\) is a hypersurface of \({\mathbb C}^3\) defined by the equation \(x^ny=Q(x,z)\), where \(n\geq 1\), and \(Q\) is a polynomial such that \(Q(0,z)\) is of degree at least 2. The first examples where introduced by \textit{W. Danielewski} [``On a cancellation problem and automorphism groups of affine algebraic varieties'', Preprint, Warsaw (1989)], where he showed that, if \(Q=z(z-1)\), then \(X_1=X_{Q,1}\) and \(X_2=X_{Q,2}\) are non isomorphic, but \(X_1\times{\mathbb C}\) and \(X_2\times {\mathbb C}\) are isomorphic. In the present article, the author gives a complete classification of Danielewski hypersurfaces as algebraic varieties. This is done by defining a standard form. It is shown that each Danielewski hypersurface is isomorphic to one in standard form, and that the standard form can be determined algorithmically. The author also studies the embeddings of these surfaces as hypersurfaces. He gives a complete classification of Danielewski hypersurfaces up to automorphism of the ambient space. In particular, it is shown that every Danielewski hypersurface \(X_{Q,n}\) with \(n \geq 2\) admits at least two nonequivalent algebraic embeddings into \({\mathbb C}^3\).
