The authors consider two dynamical systems: a periodically-forced, damped Duffing oscillator (the master system) and a periodically-forced, undamped pendulum (the slave system). Added to the dynamics of the slave system are discontinuous functions of the states of both the master and slave systems, the key parameters being the magnitudes of these piecewise-constant functions. The authors choose parameters of the master system so that it is chaotic and then determine conditions under which the slave system synchronizes with this chaotic motion. The results are demonstrated with numerical simulations.
