The dual space \(G^{\ast}\) of a locally compact group \(G\) is the set of extreme points of the set of positive definite functions of norm one on \(G.\) Some algebraic and functorial properties of the dual are presented. Using \(G^{\ast},\) the \textit{bipolar property} for subgroups of \(G\) is defined. It is shown that for (closed) subgroups of \(G,\) this property is equivalent to the separation property defined and studied by Kaniuth and Lau earlier. The dual space is also used to study invariant convex subsets of \(A(G)\) (the Fourier algebra) and \(VN(G)\) (the group von Neumann algebra) and invariantly complemented subspaces of \(VN(G).\)
