A non-metric perfectly normal hereditarily indecomposable continuum (Q664682): Difference between revisions

A continuum is a compact connected Hausdorff space. A continuum \(X\) is indecomposable provided that it is not the union of two proper subcontinua. Given a point \(p\) in a continuum \(X\), the composant of \(p\) is the union of all proper subcontinua of \(X\) containing \(p\). \textit{D. P. Bellamy} [Fundam. Math. 101, 129--134 (1978; Zbl 0398.54020)] constructed two indecomposable continua, one having exactly one composant and the other one having two composants. A classical problem in this area is to determine if there are indecomposable continua with \(n\) composants, for each \(2<n\). In this line of research, the authors have endeavored to develop techniques to construct non-metric hereditarily indecomposable continua and to determine the number of composants of these continua. Exploring the possible techniques to produce examples, the authors produced the continuum \(X\) presented in this paper which has the following properties: it is non-metric, perfectly normal, hereditarily indecomposable and first countable. They finish the paper by asking the following interesting question: Is every non-metric hereditarily indecomposable perfectly normal continuum separable?
