Let \(p(z)\) be a monic polynomial of degree \(d\) with simple roots \(\lambda_j\). Let \(\delta_j\) denote the polynomials of degree \(d-1\) taking the value \(1\) at \(\lambda_j\) and vanishing at the other roots. The author considers representations of holomorphic functions of the form \(f(z) = \sum_{j=1}^d\delta_j(z)f_j(p(z))\) for suitable \(f_j\)'s. Applications to \(K\)-spectral sets (in the sense of von Neumann) are given. To give a sample, one result of the paper is the following. Suppose that \(A\in B(H)\) is a bounded linear operator acting on a Hilbert space \(H\). Let \(R \geq 0\) satisfy \(\left\| p(A) \right\| \leq R\) and be such that the lemniscate \(\Gamma_R := \{z\in {\mathbb C} : \| p(z)\| =R\}\) contains no critical points of \(p\). Then the domain bounded by the lemniscate \(\Gamma_R\) is a \(K\)-spectral set for \(A\). An upper bound for the constant \(K\) is also given.
