The author provides a brief overview of the life of a renown mathematician Leonid Kantorovich and describes his principal contributions to functional analysis and applied mathematics. An important role of linear programming for the formation of the modern view on the interactions between mathematics and economics and seminal Kantorovich's research that laid foundations of a new science are also discussed.
