In this paper a new characterization of finite solvable groups involving only the combinatorics of subgroup lattices is given. More precisely, the authors show that a finite group is solvable if and only if its subgroup lattice contains a maximal chain and a chain consisting of modular elements which have the same length.

In this paper a new characterization of finite solvable groups involving only the combinatorics of subgroup lattices is given. More precisely, the authors show that a finite group is solvable if and only if its subgroup lattice contains a maximal chain and a chain consisting of modular elements which have the same length.
