Let \(E\) be a complex Banach space and let \(T\) be a bounded operator on \(E\). The authors introduce and study the notion of \textit{numerical hypercyclicity}: \(T\) is said to be numerically hypercyclic if there exist two non-zero elements \(x\in E\) and \(x^{*}\in E^{*}\) such that the set \(\{x^{*}(T^{n}x):n\in \mathbb{N}\}\) is dense in \(E\). It is shown that, contrary to hypercyclic operators, numerically hypercyclic operators exist on any finite-dimensional complex space of dimension at least 2. Numerically hypercyclic weighted shifts on \(\ell_{p}\) and \(c_{0}\) are chacterized. An example of a numerically hypercyclic weighted shift on the (nonseparable) space \(\ell_{\infty }\) is also given.
