If \(\tau\) is an equivalence relation on a semigroup \(S\), the semigroup is `\(\tau\)-congruence-free' if every congruence on \(S\) either meets \(\tau\) trivially or contains \(\tau\). (Thus \(S\) is congruence-free if it is \(\omega\)-congruence-free, where \(\omega\) is the universal relation on \(S\).) The authors determine the completely regular semigroups that have this property with respect to the individual Green relations. For instance, such a semigroup is \(\mathcal H\)-congruence-free if either it is a band or exactly one of its completely simple components has nontrivial maximal subgroups, in which case those subgroups are simple.
